POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (5-0) rolled through CÉGEP André-Laurendeau (Quebec) 3-0 before rallying for a dramatic 3-2 victory over Kean University (6-1) in the later contest.
The Bears took the first two sets from the Boomerang 25-19 before closing out the exhibition victory with a 25-16 decision. Sophomore setter Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) had six aces and 12 digs and senior libero Sloane Campbell (Scotia, N.Y./Burnt-Hills/Ballston Lake) added 15 digs and 26 assists.
In the later game, the Cougars shook off a Potsdam rally to take set one 25-20. The Bears answered with a strong 25-16 effort. In set three, Kean raced out to a 9-0 lead before holding on to a 25-15 win. The Cougars started quickly in set four, but couldn't shake Potsdam who evened the match with a 25-22 win. The teams traded short runs in the fifth set before the Bears closed out the 19-17 decision.
Freshman outside hitter Gabrielle Scott (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) had a career day to lead Potsdam's offense with 18 kills. She also had 17 digs and two aces. Junior opposite Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) was also impressive with 16 kills and 18 digs. Rodda totaled a season-high 41 assists to go with 13 digs. Campbell had 18 digs and two aces.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host Johnson State at noon and Canton at 4 p.m. on the final day of the tournament.
