POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (12-10, 4-0 SUNYAC) defeated SUNY Geneseo 3-0 on the first play of SUNYAC Pool Play at Maxcy Hall Field House. The victory kept the Bears a perfect 4-0 in conference play and tied for first with Buffalo State and New Paltz.
Potsdam trailed the Blue Knights early in the first set, but slowly caught and passed them for a 25-19 victory. In the second set, the Bears were in control for entire frame and cruised to a 25-16 win. Geneseo built several sizable leads in the final set, but Potsdam stormed back to edge the Knights 25-23 and complete the sweep.
Junior outside hitters Liza Fields (Duanesburg, N.Y./Duanesburg) and Sharon Ofori (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) each had a team-high six kills. Fields also chipped in eight digs. Senior setter/right side Jenna Blujas (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) finished with five kills, 11 assists and a game and season-high eight services aces. Sophomore setter/outside hitter Casey Chase (Central Square, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) had four kills and two assists. Senior setter Lauren Manzo (Clovis, Calif./San Joaquin) had a team-high 12 assists. Junior libero Gabby Arana (Williston, Park, N.Y./Herricks) contributed a team-leading 13 digs.
Junior outside hitter Meagan Johnson (East Moriches, N.Y./Westhampton Beach) and sophomore middle hitter Paige Pendleton (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) each posted eight kills for Geneseo. Sophomore right side Erika Dannefelser (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) had 17 assists and sophomore defensive specialist Samantha Holdredge (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) finished with 23 digs.
In other first day action at Maxcy, Plattsburgh (9-12, 2-2) downed Cortland (11-13, 2-2) 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-23) and Fredonia (15-8, 2-2) blanked Oswego (13-10, 0-4) 3-0 (25-17, 25-6, 25-16).
The Bears are back in action tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. as they host the Plattsburgh Cardinals. Potsdam then rounds out the weekend with Fredonia at 3 p.m.
