MAHWAH, N.J.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball (6-5) bowed to Fairleigh Dickenson University-Florham (5-3) 3-0 before holding off St. Joseph's College of Long Island (1-6) 3-2.
The Devils took 25-19, 25-16 and 25-14 victories from Potsdam in the first match of the day. A pair of young Bears lead the offense. Freshman opposite Cierra Farnschalder (Palm Bay, Fla./Palm Bay Magnet) posted a career and team-high nine kills and fellow freshman outside hitter Anika Anderson (Honolulu, Hawaii/Radford) contributed eight. Junior captain Brianna Rodda (Holbrook/Sachem East) had 21 digs. Anderson also totaled 13 digs, while junior libero Maddie Kaplan (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) added 10 and senior captain Kelsea Healis (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate) finished with eight.
Potsdam won a set one marathon 31-29 and took set two 25-20 for a 2-0 lead before the Eagles evened the match with consecutive 25-20 wins. The Bears raced out to an early lead in set five before having to rally late for the 17-15 win. Healis registered 16 kills and 26 digs. Senior captain Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) had 10 kills, four aces, two blocks, five assists and 33 digs. Senior outside hitter Kelsey Tompkins (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) also totaled 10 kills and Farnschlader added a game-high five blocks. Rodda topped her first match performance with 41 assists and 17 digs.
The Bears open up SUNYAC play at Plattsburgh on Friday at 5 p.m. On Saturday, they square off with SUNY New Paltz at 12 p.m. and SUNY Geneseo at 2:30 p.m.
