POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Geneseo (5-6-4, 3-3-2 SUNYAC) scored an early goal and made it stand up as the Blue Knights topped the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (5-10-1, 2-6) 1-0 at Maxcy Turf Field on Friday afternoon. The loss eliminates the Bears from playoff contention.
Geneseo controlled the play in the first half, but were only able to get one goal on the board. At the 18:44 mark, freshman forward Erin O'Connor (Remsen, N.Y./Remsen) snuck a shot past Potsdam freshman goalkeeper Michaela Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) with a helper from senior midfielder Alexa Vojvodic (Mineola, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy). Cole finished with five saves in the first 45 minutes and the Bears defense quickly defused Geneseo's other chances.
The second half was much more even. The Blue Knights outshot Potsdam 5-2, but the each team managed just two shots on goal. The Bears defense held Geneseo without a shot over the last 18 minutes of the contest, however Potsdam was unable to find the equalizer.
Cole finished the game with seven saves, while Blue Knight senior goalie Julia Sanger (Penfield, N.Y./Fairport) made two saves to earn the shutout.
The Bears wrap up the 2013 season tomorrow afternoon when they host the Brockport Golden Eagles at 1 p.m.
