SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (13-18) was defeated by Ithaca College (23-5) and Union College (24-11) on the final day of the Skidmore Invitational to close out its 2016 season. Junior outside hitter Kelsey Tompkins (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) was named to the all-tournament team.
In the first match of the day, Ithaca captured the win 3-0 with scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-23. Junior opposite Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) led the Bears with 10 kills and seven digs. Senior outside hitter Stephanie Maddox (Anaheim, Calif./Cornelia Connelly) had five kills and Tompkins added four. Freshman outside hitter Gabrielle Scott (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) posted six digs and two aces. Sophomore setter Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) contributed a game-high 27 assists and senior libero Sloane Campbell (Scotia, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) chipped in seven digs.
Against the Dutchwomen, Potsdam fell in the first two sets by 25-17 counts before being edged 28-26 in the third. Maddox posted seven kills and Tompkins had six. Scott finished her freshman season with six kills and 13 digs. Rodda added 22 more assists and eight digs to her weekend. Campbell contributed six digs and senior outside hitter Nikki Wormwood (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) had two aces.
The contests bring to a close the careers of seniors Whitney Coyle (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley), Campbell, Wormwood and Maddox.
