Bears' Volleyball down Bengals, fall to Red Dragons in pool play

OSWEGO, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (13-8, 1-5 SUNYAC) defeated Buffalo State (5-18, 0-6) 3-1 before falling to SUNY Cortland (12-11, 2-4) by the same score on the final day of SUNYAC Pool Play.

In the first contest of the day, the Bengals took the opening set 25-20, but the Bears rallied for three straight victories by scores of 30-28, 25-21 and 25-13. Freshman outside hitter Gabrielle Scott (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) had a game-high 14 kills to go with three aces and 11 digs. Junior outside hitters Kelsey Tompkins (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) and Kelsea Healis (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate) added 11 and nine kills, respectively. Sophomore setter Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) registered 35 assists and three aces. Sophomore defensive specialist Maddie Kaplan (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) contributed 11 digs and four assists and junior opposite Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Calif./Chugiak) led the Bears with 18 digs.

Against the Red Dragons, Potsdam rallied from a 25-21 set one loss with a 25-20 set two victory. Cortland then overpowered the Bears in the final two sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-12. Topf had a contest-best 13 kills to go with 10 digs and two aces. Scott had eight kills and 14 digs. Rodda closed out her day with 30 more assists and senior defensive specialist Whitney Coyle (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) posted 11 digs.

The Bears head across town to Clarkson on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. battle with the Golden Knights.
