Bears volleyball bows to Dragons, sweeps Lakers on final day of pool play

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (5-9, 1-2 SUNYAC) fell to SUNY Oneonta (6-9, 1-2 SUNYAC) 3-1 before defeating Oswego State (11-6, 1-2 SUNYAC) 3-0 on the second day of SUNYAC pool play.

The Red Dragons narrowly escaped the first set 27-25, however the Bears were able to take the second set 25-21. Oneonta took the final two sets each ending 25-21. Sophomore outside hitter Gabby Scott (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) led the Bears with 13 kills and four aces. Sophomore outside hitter Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) had nine kills, 10 digs and an ace. Sophomore middle hitter Monica Mack (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) and freshman Alyssa Rogers (Anchorage, Alaska/Grace Christian) both ended with six kills, while Mack finished with seven digs and Rogers had six. Senior setter Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) had 31 assists, seven digs and an ace.

Potsdam later swept Oswego with scores of 25-16, 33-31, and 25-23. Scott led the Bears in kills in this contest with 22. Hansen was next in line with 11 kills and had a pair of block assists. Mack and Rodgers each had four kills and a pair of aces. Rodda had 37 assists and two kills. Junior libero Natalie Magallon (Commerce, Calif./Bell Gardens) led Potsdam with 24 digs and tacked on two assists.

The Bears are back in action Friday as they travel down Route 11 to face St. Lawrence at 4 p.m. and Cazenovia at 6 p.m. for day one of the St. Lawrence/Canton Classic.
