Bears tame Mustangs in men's lacrosse season opener

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (1-0) scored eight unanswered goals in a 10-4 victory over Morrisville State (0-2) Saturday afternoon. Senior midfielder Derek Frost led the Bears with three goals and two assists and freshman midfielder Pat Bonafede added two goals in his first collegiate appearance.

The Bears notched six first quarter goals to open up the 2013 campaign. Frost connected on the first goal just 56 seconds into the contest. Freshman attacker Ed Doherty added his first collegiate goal in a Potsdam uniform with 10:05 remaining in the first quarter. The Bears continued to roll and a dish by junior midfielder Jeff Seager to Bonafede gave Potsdam the 3-0 lead. Frost would add his second tally of the game at the 6:04 mark. Senior attacker Kyle Nicholas maintained the Bears momentum, tallying an extra-man goal with 5:31 remaining in the first. Senior midfielder Brady Fremont would notch the final goal of the first stanza with 18 seconds remaining.

Potsdam maintained the pressure in the second quarter. Frost and Bonafede would find the back of the net within the first two minutes of the second stanza to claim an 8-0 lead. Morrisville's Louie Geswaldo would finally sneak one by senior goalie Stefan Sloma at the 10:19 mark to put the Mustangs on the board. However, junior midfielder Robbie Ashlaw answered with 1:51 left in the half to secure a 9-1 advantage at the break.

In the third quarter, junior attacker Rob Kunz tallied his first goal of the season at the 13:49 mark. Morrisville finally slowed down the Bears momentum in the final two quarters. The Mustangs would mount an offensive as Potsdam struggled to stay out of the penalty area. Sophomore midfielder Brendan Shannon started the charge with 11:49 remaining. Freshman midfielder John Sherlock added another tally just 20 seconds later. Sophomore midfielder David Middlemore would connect on Morrisville's third straight goal at the 8:51 mark. Yet, Potsdam would halt the Mustangs for the remainder of the contest to cruise to the 10-4 victory.

In goal, Sloma finished with eight saves and the Mustang's freshman goalie Chris Fiore totaled 14 stops.

Potsdam outshot Morrisville 46-23 and was 1-5 in extra-man opportunities. Morrisville finished 0-6 on the extra-man attack.

The Bears return to action Wednesday, Mar 13. against cross-town rival Clarkson University at the Maxcy Turf Field. Faceoff is set for 4 p.m.
