Bear's swimming and diving: a reversal of fortunes for the men and women at Norwich University

It was a day for a reversal of fortunes for the SUNY Potsdam men's and women's swimming and diving teams.

Exactly one week after the men prevailed and the women took a loss at Skidmore College, the opposite results occurred this time at Norwich University in Northfield, VT, on Saturday.

The Potsdam women dispatched of Norwich 87-47 while the Potsdam men lost 132-109.

Junior Emily Kanoza (Syracuse, N.Y. / West Genesee), senior Ghena Binzer (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C.W. Baker) and freshmen Rachel Malzacher (Chester, N.Y. / Monroe-Woodbury) and Jessica Lilly (Warwick, N.Y . / Warwick Valley) teamed up to win the 200-yard medley relay in 2:04.13. Individually, Kanoza also won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:10.07.

Junior Victoria Blakeslee was a double winner as she took first place in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:40.52) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:25.44).

The team got another boost from its' promising freshman as Jennifer Yeager (Greene, N.Y. / Green) touched the wall first at 27.42 in the 50-yard freestyle and Heather Lian (West Babylon, N.Y. / West Babylon) scored 109.10 to pick up a victory in the one-meter diving event.

Fresh off his five-win performance and being named the Bears' male athlete of the week, senior Richie Zimmerman (Victor, N.Y. / Victor) secured victories in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:43.75), the 100-yard backstroke (58.51) and 500-yard freestyle (5:14.98).

Junior Daniel Costa (Spencerport, N.Y. / Spencerport) was victorious in the 50-yard freestyle (22.76) and 100-yard freestyle (49.16) while sophomore Tyler Zapisek (Syracuse, N.Y. / West Genesee) clocked in at 1:53.00 to take the 200-yard freestyle.

Costa and Zapisek also team with freshmen Tom Belton (Homer, N.Y./ Homer) and Ricky Blackburn (Cicero, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse) to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:31.61.

Senior Jeff Scarano (Kinderhook, N.Y. / Ichabod Crane) earned 120.35 points to win the one-meter diving event.

Potsdam (both teams 1-1) will hold its home opener Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. against the College at Brockport.
