Bears swimming and diving downs Norwich

POTSDAM, N.Y.-- The SUNY Potsdam swimming and diving teams swept Norwich University on Saturday afternoon at Maxcy Hall Pool. The Bears men edged the Cadets 118-114 and the women breezed to a 130-80 victory.

Freshman Abby Adams (South Bend, Ind./John Adams), senior Victoria Blakeslee (Gloversville, N.Y./Gloversville), senior Devorah Sorbo (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) and freshman Darien Frederick (Clayton, N.Y./Thousand Islands) teamed to win the women's 400 medley relay (5:04.50) by better than a 45-second margin. Adams and Blakeslee followed the performance with solo victories in 100 free (1:02.28) and 500 free (5:52.91). Frederick also swept the diving portion of the meet with two wins in the three-meter (175.70) and the one-meter (173.55) competition.

The women spread the wealth throughout the meet with sophomore Kristin Canjura (Wilton, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) touching the wall first in the 1000 free (11:55.06) and the 200 backstroke (2:27.77), while sophomore Kira Wood (Hopewell, N.Y./John Jay) took the victory in the 200 free (2:18.36). Sophomore Jennifer Yeager (Greene, N.Y./Greene) won the 50 free (27.33), while freshman Emily Gulitti (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) performed at her best for the 200 IM with a time of 2:27.86.

Junior Tyler Zapisek (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) won the 200 IM (2:06.21) then teamed up with freshman Jacob Van De Valk (Genoa, N.Y./Southern Cayuga), freshman Andrew Strazzella (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) and sophomore Ricky Blackburn (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) to take the win in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:24.60.

Senior Dan Costa (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport) got two wins for the Bears in the 50 free (22.64) and the 200 backstroke (2:07.54) and Blackburn got his second victory in the 100 free with a 50.99 time. Junior Delvyne Santiago (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) won in the 1000 free (11:03.79) and freshman Austin Wheeler (Perry, N.Y./Perry) took the crown in the three-meter dive with a score of 187.45.

The Bears hit the road next weekend for a dual meet at Brockport on Nov. 15, at 2 p.m.
