BUFFALO, N.Y.—Senior captain Tyler Zapisek (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) fell just 26 hundredths of a second short of capturing his third straight SUNYAC 100 Butterfly Title. His strong performance was the highlight of Day 3 at the SUNYAC Championships for the SUNY Potsdam swimming and diving team. It was a strong day overall for the Bears as Potsdam swimmers reached the finals in 13 total events.
Zapisek finished third in the 100 FLY with a time of 50.61, narrowly missing his own Bears record of 50.59 that he set a year ago. Geneseo's Yonghoon Jun and Scott Guyton edged Zapisek with times of 50.35 and 50.53.
The men's 800 Free Relay team of Zapisek, Van De Valk, senior Delvyne Santiago (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) and Blackburn were also seventh in 7:17.56. The women's team, featuring sophomore Emily Gulitti (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), Wood, Fraser and junior Jennifer Yeager (Greene, N.Y./Greene) finished eighth in 8:39.03.
Carlini finished 15th overall in the men's 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:02.59, while Zimmerman and Fraser nearly matched each other in the women's race with finishes of 1:12.16 and 1:12.18 to place 12th and 13th.
Blackburn was 11th in the men's 200 Free (1:48.14) and Yeager was 14th for the women (2:01.92). Santiago was 11th in the men's 400 IM (4:30.01) and Gulitti was eighth in the A finals for the women in 4:56.30. In the men's 100 Backstroke, Van de Valk placed 12th with a time of 57.02.
Junior Tim Knapp (Newark, N.Y./Newark) and freshman Matt Murphy (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) finished 15th and 16th in the men's 1-meter diving competition with scores of 291.20 and 257.65, respectively.
With one day of competition left, the Bears women are currently ninth and the men are eighth.
