Bears swim teams split with Thoroughbreds in season opener

POTSDAM, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam swimming and diving teams split their season opener with Skidmore College on Saturday afternoon. The Bears women topped the Thoroughbreds 116-112, while the men fell, 117-107.

Five different Bears led the women's team to their victory over the Thoroughbreds. Sophomore Kristin Canjura (Wilton, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) won the 1000 free (11:46.79), while sophomore Jennifer Yeager (Greene, N.Y./Greene) touched the wall first in the 200 free (2:07.52). Freshman Emily Gulitti (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) captured the 100 fly (1:04.16) in her debut and freshman Colleen Fraser (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) also recorded her first career victory in the 100 Breaststroke (1:17.86). Freshman Darien Frederick (Clayton, N.Y./Thousand Islands) pushed Potsdam passed Skidmore with her two wins in the one-meter dive (192.70) and the three-meter dive (190.95).

Fellow captains, senior Dan Costa (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport) and junior Tyler Zapisek (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) led the men on the day with two wins each. Costa posted wins in the 50 free (22.69) and the 100 free (51.26), while Zapisek added victories in the 200 IM (2:10.43) and 100 free (51.26). Costa and Zapisek added another win to their total for the day with the help of junior Chris Carlini (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) and freshman Jacob Van De Valk (Genoa, N.Y./Genoa) with a victory in the 200 medley relay (1:43.02).

Potsdam will return to Maxcy Hall Pool next Saturday, Nov. 8 for their meet with the Norwich Cadets at 1p.m.
