POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (8-22, 5-11 SUNYAC) swept SUNY New Paltz (14-21-1, 7-11 SUNYAC) by scores of 6-3 and 4-2 on Saturday afternoon. Senior pitcher Samantha Hubinsky (Gansevoort, N.Y./South Glens Falls) went 4-for-8 with three runs scored, while junior centerfielder Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) went 3-for-5, scoring three times on the day. Falsion also stole three bases to establish a new career program record with 43.

The Bears scored their first run in the bottom of the first of the opener when senior catcher Lauren Brace (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah Central) singled to left center to drive in Falsion.

Potsdam ran away with the contest in the third inning, scoring five times for a 6-0 lead. Hubinsky scored on a fielding error. Brace then laid down a perfect bunt to reach first and score Falsion. One out later, sophomore first baseman Megan Fish (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) crossed home after a ground out to make it 4-0. Yesterday's hero, freshman shortstop Grace Folmsbee (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook), followed with a double deep to left field that brought in sophomore pinch runner Abigail Hodgdon (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond). Senior right fielder Meghan Dougherty (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) knocked in the fifth run with a single to right center that brought in Folmsbee.

The Hawks cut the lead in half in the sixth after capitalizing on a throwing error, a wild pitch and a bases loaded single from Shannon Fee.

The Hawks threated in the top of the seventh with two base hits. However, junior pitcher Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) slammed the door to pick up the save.

Hubinsky (2-7) got the win after pitching 5.1 innings, striking out three, and allowing one earned run on four hits. McCauley went 1.2 innings, striking out one and allowing three hits. Lauren Cappelo (8-10) and Alyssa Pfitscher each pitched 3.0 innings and struck out one for New Paltz. Cappello allowed two earned runs on five hits, while Pfitscher gave up only a hit.

Hubinsky went 2-for-4 and scored a run, while Falsion went 1-for-3 and scored twice. Brace and Folmsbee each went 1-for-3 and combined for three RBI.

The Hawks started the scoring in the first inning of game two. Cappello made it 1-0 with a single to left field to score Julia DiSpigna.

In the bottom of the second, freshman catcher Shelby Van Epps (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) singled to left center to score sophomore right fielder Lucy Condon (Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic) and tie the game.

Fish broke the stalemate in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly that plated Hubinsky. Condon added an RBI single to score Falsion and Potsdam led 3-1. The Hawks countered in the top of the fifth with an infield single from Perhacs that scored Fee and cut the lead to one.

The Bears got the run back afterin the bottom of the fifth as Brace laid down another bunt that drove in Hubinsky.

New Paltz had an opportunity in the sixth with two runners on, but again was shut down by Bears' pitching in the clutch.

Fish came in to close and was given the save after pitching 1.2 innings, striking out two, and allowing one hit. Pfitscher (4-8) pitched 4.1 innings for the Hawks and allowed four runs on 10 hits. She's also third in triples (6) and ERA (4.04).
