OSWEGO, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam softball team (11-21, 2-14 SUNYAC) was swept on the road against Oswego St. by scores of 9-6 and 8-0. The games were originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, but rain push the games back to Sunday and the Lakers took advantage of the extra day of rest.
The Bears scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Megan Johnson stroked a one out double and moved to second on a walk. A fielder's choice would load the bases of Potsdam's top RBI hitter, Jenny Jones. Jones would add one RBI to her total on a base hit, and Molly McCuin would add another RBI base hit. Freshman Carissa Cornwell pushed the third run across courtesy of a bases loaded walk but the Lakers would charge back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Bears would extend the lead to 6-2 in the third on a two RBI double by freshman Erin Klettke who then came around to score on a wild pitch. However, the Lakers would score the game's final seven runs, including four in the bottom of the fifth, to pull out the victory. McCuin paced the offense with two of the team's five hits. Oswego pounded out 12 hits and senior Katie Nawrot took the loss on the mound.
Ashley Snyder threw six scoreless innings in game two of the doubleheader and allowed only five hits whil striking out 10 batters. The Lakers (12-19, 6-8) scored two in the first, one in the third, three in the fourth and two in the sixth to defeat Potsdam 8-0. Junior Heather Johnson led Potsdam with two hits in three at bats including a double. Sophomore Ashley Thayer took the loss, allowing five earned runs in 5 1/3 innings pitched.
The Bears return to action on Tuesday with a doubleheader on Tuesday against St. Lawrence. The non-conference matchup takes place at 3 p.m.
