VIRGINIA BEACH, VA.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (1-1) defeated St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn (1-3) 6-1 in its first game of the season before falling to Allegheny College (1-1) 4-2 on the first day of the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast. After missing all of last season due to injury, senior pitcher Samantha Hubinsky (Gansevoort, N.Y./South Glens Falls) returned to action with a complete game victory over the St. Joe's Bears. Sophomore pitcher Meghan Fish (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) was 3-for-6 on the day with two runs scored and two RBI.

St. Joe's drew first blood in the bottom of the first as third baseman Amber Wainwright singled up the middle to score shortstop Paige Csikortos. The Bears tied the game on an infield single to short from Fish that plated sophomore left fielder Lucy Condon (Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic).

Potsdam broke the game open with a five-run top of the fourth. Junior centerfielder Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) put the Bears on top for good with a single to score freshman catcher Shelby Van Epps (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Ballston Lake-Burnt Hills). Freshman shortstop Grace Folmsbee (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) then came home on a passed ball to make it 4-1. Fish drove in Condon with another single and Hubinsky scored on an error to make it 6-1.

Hubinsky (1-0) shut down the other Bears' bats the rest of the way. In her seven innings, she struck out three, walked four and allowed the one earned run on seven hits. Theresa Armano (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing all six runs, just two earned, on six hits and three walks, while striking out two. Victoria Mahoney pitched three scoreless innings in relief, striking out three and allowing three hits.

Falsion finished 1-for-2 with a run scored and one RBI. Folmsbee was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Fish was also 2-for-4 with two RBI.

In the second game of the day, Allegheny shortstop Jessica Zavolta put the Gators in front in the top of the first with a single to right center to score designated player Samantha Valera. Potsdam evened the game bottom of the second as Fish scored on a passed ball.

The Bears grabbed their only lead of the contest in the bottom of the fourth as senior captain Lauren Brace (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah) knocked in Fish with an infield single to third.

The Gators tied the game in the top of the fifth as catcher Haley Behr singled to left to score left fielder Kelly Lafferty. Behr struck again in the top of the seventh with a double to left that again plated Lafferty. First baseman Jessica Valerino gave Allegheny some insurance with a single to left that knocked in Zavolta. Allegheny pitcher Baylee Tarnowski retired the Bears in order in the bottom of the seventh.

Tarnowski allowed the two earned runs on just two hits, while walking one and striking out six. Fish allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out two in the first five innings. Senior pitcher Meghan Dougherty (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing two earned runs on three hits in the last two innings. She struck out one and walked two.

Fish was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Brace was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Bears square off with SUNY Cobleskill at 10 a.m. tomorrow and Rhode Island College at noon before beginning the trek back North.
