POTSDAM, N.Y.—Sophomore left fielder Sami Hubinsky (South Glens Falls, N.Y./SUNY Adirondack) singled with two out in the seventh inning to lift the SUNY Potsdam softball team (9-12, 2-2 SUNYAC) to a 2-1 win over the College at Brockport (13-11, 1-7) in the day's finale. The Golden Eagles took game one 10-6.

In the opener, Brockport jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the first two innings on five hits, but the Bears countered with three in the bottom of the second. Junior first baseman Erin Murphy (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) scored on two-out error for Potsdam's first run. Hubinsky followed with a bases loaded walk to force in the second run. Junior shortstop Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) then made it 4-3 as she trotted home on a wild pitch. Ott drove in freshman center fielder Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) with a one out triple to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth.

The Golden Eagles regained the lead for good with four runs on five hits in the top of the fifth. In the Bears' half of the inning, senior captain Alexis Lerman (Fayetteville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) drove in fellow senior captain Katie Marsman (Wantagh, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary) with a single to left to cut the deficit to 8-5. Brockport tacked on a run in each of the sixth and seventh innings to extend its lead to five. Potsdam loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but could only produce one more run. Senior pinch runner Rachel Grefke (Livonia, Mich./Clarenceville) was forced out at home for the second out. Ott followed with a single that scored Lerman, but junior pinch runner Noelle Rufa (Helena, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) was tagged out in a rundown to end the contest.

Hubinsky (3-5) allowed six earned runs on nine hits and three walks, while striking out five in 4.1 innings. Freshman Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) gave up one earned run on five hits in the last 2.2 innings. She recorded two strikeouts. Brockport senior Jamie Berger (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) improved to 8-4 with the win. She allowed three earned runs on 10 hits and seven walks over the seven innings. She struck out six Bears.

Ott finished 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI. Marsman went 2-for-4 and Lerman was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Game two was a pitcher's duel down to the final at bat. Senior third baseman Samantha Cohn (Monticello, N.Y./Monticello) drove in Lerman in the bottom of the second with a double to left and Potsdam led 1-0. Dougherty cruised through the first six innings, stranding five Golden Eagles. She pitched a perfect top of the sixth as the Bears held on to the 1-0 advantage.

In the top of the seventh, Brockport senior right fielder Amanda Yuhas (Hamburg, N.Y./Eden) hit a one-out double to left center. She was replaced with a pinch runner who advanced to third on a ground out. Down to the final out, senior shortstop Paige Monachino singled to right to tie the game. After an error placed runners at first and second with two out, Dougherty got Golden Eagles senior pitcher Korey Kibling (Lafayette, N.Y./Bishop Luddent) to fly out to end the threat.

Kibling walked Dougherty to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Junior pinch hitter Angela Yodis (Duanesberg, N.Y./Schalmont) bunted her to second. Brockport then wisely put Ott aboard with an intentional walk. Kibling got senior pinch hitter Lyndale Nephew (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Seton Catholic) to pop up for the second out, setting the stage for the dramatic finale. Hubinsky singled safely to right center field to score Dougherty and end the contest.

Dougherty evened her record at 4-4. She allowed just the one run on six hits for the complete game victory. Kibling was nearly as good. She allowed two runs on just three hits, but walked six.

Cohn was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Hubinsky was 1-for-4 with the game-winner. Ott walked three times during the contest.

Prior to the games, Potsdam honored seniors Nephew, Cohn, Grefke, Carina Chirinko (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), Lerman, Marsman, as well as student manager Meghan Gabri (Madrid, N.Y./Madrid Waddington).
