GENESEO, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam softball team (5-5, 0-4 SUNYAC) concluded a tough SUNYAC road slate versus SUNY Geneseo (6-10, 2-2 SUNYAC) Saturday afternoon. The Blue Knights completed a sweep of the Bears by a score of 9-1 and 10-2.
In the opening game, Geneseo used a strong fifth inning to pull away from the Bears and set the tone for the doubleheader. Junior Megan Johnson put Potsdam on top in the second inning with a single to right center, bringing in sophomore Carissa Cornwell. However, the Blue Knights' stingy defense and pitching would not allow the Bears to cross the plate again. Geneseo responded to the challenge with two runs in the second to claim a 2-1 advantage. The Blue Knights continued to roll, notching three runs in the third and fourth innings. Geneseo rode the momentum into the fifth inning with four more tallies to conclude the contest.
Cornwell went one for one with a stand up double and was the lone Bear to cross the plate. Junior Ashley Thayer pitched 4.2 innings and recorded seven strikeouts. Geneseo senior Katie Gallagher allowed four hits and finished with three strikeouts in the win.
The second game in the doubleheader resulted in the same fate. Geneseo would open up the game with seven unanswered runs going into the fifth inning. Yet, Potsdam continued to battle despite the deficit. The Bears found new energy in the fifth behind senior captain Heather Johnson. The senior would spark Potsdam with a triple to right field to start off the inning. Cornwell and freshman Alexis Lerman would add RBIs to put the Bears on the board. However, Geneseo closed the door on the Potsdam momentum to secure the 10-2 victory in the sixth inning.
Cornwell led the Bears, going one for two with one RBI. Senior Amanda Perry finished two for three on the day. Freshman pitcher Jordan Sarat totaled five innings on the mound and tallied two strikeouts. Blue Knight sophomore pitcher Nicole Zimmerman pitched four innings and recorded four strikeouts. Sophomore Corrin Spallone finished the game in relief with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
The Bears return to action Tuesday, April 2 versus local North Country rival St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
