PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (13-26, 3-15 SUNYAC) gave the two-seed in the upcoming SUNYAC Tournament all they could handle before falling 2-1 and 4-3 at SUNY Plattsburgh (25-15, 13-5) on Saturday afternoon. Junior shortstop Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) went 4-for-6 in the two games to set the program's single season and all-time hits records with 48 and 121, respectively.

In game one, sophomore pitcher Sami Hubinsky (South Glens Falls, N.Y./SUNY Adirondack) dueled Cardinal Morgan Anderson into extra innings. In the top of the third, Ott reached with a single and senior right fielder Carina Chirinko (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) drove her in with a double to left. Plattsburgh didn't get to Hubinsky until the bottom of the fifth. Shortstop Kaitlyn Preiss singled to score designated hitter Samantha Railey and tie the game. The score remained even until Cardinal left fielder Amy Glashof drove in third baseman Jackie Decker with one out in the bottom of the eighth for the walk-off victory.

Hubinsky (4-10) allowed one earned run on eight hits and three walks in 7.1 innings pitched, while striking out five. Anderson allowed one run on eight hits and two walks over the entire eight innings. She struck out nine.

Ott was 3-for-3 with a run and senior captain Alexis Lerman (Fayetteville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) went 2-for-4.

Plattsburgh built a 4-0 lead over the first five innings of the second game, but the Bears rallied for three in the top of the sixth. Senior third baseman Samantha Cohn (Monticello, N.Y./Monticello) knocked in senior captain Katie Marsman (Wantagh, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary) for Potsdam's first run. Two batters later, Ott reached on error and sophomore catcher Lauren Brace (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah) scored. Cohn then scored on a passed ball to close the gap to 4-3. Hubinsky led off the bottom of the seventh with a single down the right field line and moved to third with one out. However, Cardinal pitcher Katie Pitkin recovered to retire the final to Bears and hang on for the win.

Freshman Alissa McCauley fell to 3-6 after allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks in the first five innings. She struck out three. Sophomore Meghan Dougherty (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) walked and struck out one in her one inning. Pitkin allowed one earned run on eight hits and four walks in seven innings. She fanned seven.

Marsman was 2-for-3 with a run and Brace was 2-for-4 with a run.

The games marked the end of the careers of seniors Lyndale Nephew (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Seton Catholic), Chirinko, Cohn, Lerman, Rachel Grefke (Livonia, Mich./Clarenceville) and Marsman. Nephew played in 62 games in two seasons, totaling 19 hits and nine RBI. Chirinko hit .257 (58-226) with 20 runs scored and 21 RBI in 79 games. She also made 43 appearances on the mound, including 17 starts, striking out 55. Cohn had 24 hits, nine runs and 17 RBI in her two seasons with the Bears. Lerman hit .246 (76-309) in four seasons. She hit eight home runs, scored 43 runs and drove in 28. Lerman played in 126 games, the second most in program history. Grefke spent three seasons with the team. She recorded her first career hit yesterday against Canton. Marsman began her Potsdam career by homering on the first college pitch she saw. She finished with a .320 career batting average (114-356), including .360 this season. She hit 10 home runs, scored 38 runs and drove in 56. She leaves Potsdam ranked fifth in batting average, fifth in slugging percentage (.480), second in at bats (356), third in hits (114), second in doubles (27), third in home runs and third in RBI.
