Bears' rally falls short at Becker, 4-3

WORCESTER, MASS.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (6-9-1) fell, 4-3, in a non-conference game at Becker College (8-7) on Saturday afternoon. Junior assistant captain Mike Arnold, sophomore defenseman Erick Ware and senior captain Brett Waters each scored for the Bears.

Arnold scored a power-play goal just 4:34 into the contest on assists from junior forward Zach Blake and senior captain Matt Viola. At the 7:00 mark, Gerald Owen answered with an even strength goal to tie the score at 1-1. David Graham scored on the man advantage nearly 10 minutes later to give the Hawks the lead for good.

Ronald Kokas made it a 3-1 contest just 2:09 into the second stanza. Potsdam picked up its play after the goal and outshot Becker 16-12 for the period. With less than two minutes left, the Bears went on the power play with a chance to draw within one. However, Cody Edwards struck for a shorthanded marker that proved to be the game-winner at the 18:55 mark.

The Bears dominated the third period, outshooting the Hawks 20-6. Waters scored a power-play goal at the 3:42 mark with to cut the gap to 4-2. Ware and freshman forward Billy Pascalli each assisted on the goal. Less than four minutes later, Ware made it a one-goal contest with helpers from Blake and sophomore forward Trevor Cope. With 2:35 remaining, Potsdam went on a five-on-three power play, but was unable to gain the equalizer.

In goal, Bears junior Shane Talarico made 27 saves and Hawk goalie Gregg Hussey finished with 46. Potsdam outshot Becker 49-31. The Bears were 2-7 on the power play and the Hawks went 1-4.

Potsdam is back in action on Friday, Jan. 19, when the Bears travel to Morrisville to battle the Mustangs at 7 p.m.
