POTSDAM, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam men’s soccer team tied Geneseo in their final SUNYAC contest of the season. Sophomore Alessio Vitale scored for the Bears as the team looks forward to postseason play.

The Blue Knights (8-6-2, 5-3-1 SUNYAC) scored the game’s first goal, in the 28th minute. John Piaggione sent a through ball up the middle that Ryan Yurcak touched past the goalie. The Bears (7-7-3, 4-3-2) would respond quickly. 43 seconds after the Knights took the lead; Vitale stole an errant pass and sent it past the Knights keeper for an unassisted score. The half would conclude with Geneseo owning a 12-5 advantage in shots.

The game got scrappy in the second half as both teams were awarded yellow cards in the 66th minute. In the 81st minute, Paul Gabriel was given a red card forcing the Bears to play the remaining 29 minutes with 10 players. Despite being a man down and outshot 23-6 in regulation, Potsdam managed to send the contest into overtime. This marked the second straight match that went to overtime with the Bears coming up short against Brockport with only 25 seconds remaining in the second overtime. The Blue Knights once again led in shots during the two overtimes, taking a 5-2 advantage. Freshman Eduardo Figueroa accounted for both overtime attempts, one being saved and the other missing high. Junior goalkeeper Paul Gabriel made one stop in the first overtime to keep the game tied and would finish the afternoon with seven saves.

“We battled, and the guys showed a lot of guts,” said second year Head Coach Adam Parker. “We went down to 10 men but we were determined to avoid the same result as yesterday. Our defense played solid and Joe Glackin was unbelievable in goal.”

Potsdam finishes SUNYAC play in a fourth place tie with Plattsburgh. The two teams tied in the conference opener on Sept 24, at Plattsburgh. The Cardinals won the tiebreaker on penalty kicks and as a result, will host the Bears in the Play-In round of the SUNYAC Tournament. The game will take place on Saturday.

The Bears will conclude their regular season schedule with a match at Clarkson on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
