BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The College at Brockport (5-1-3, 10-1-5 SUNYAC) built a big first half lead en route to a 7-3 victory over the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (9-8-1, 3-5-1) on Saturday morning. The Bears will now wait for the outcome of the afternoon games to determine if they will reach the playoffs.
Brockport got on the board in the 23rd minute as Peter DiLorenzo Headed home a corner kick from Matthew Roorda. Less than three minutes later, junior midfielder Alex Minsker (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) tipped a hard pass from junior forward Eduardo Figueroa (Rochester, N.Y./Dr. Freddie Thomas) past Golden Eagles goalie Casey Sullivan. At the 27:12 mark, DiLorenzo struck again on a pass from Collin Goettel for a 2-1 lead. Just over eight minutes later, Bobby Ross made it a two-goal Brockport advantage. David LaPietra assisted on the goal. At 37:59, Nick Cafarelli headed home a corner from LaPietra to make it 4-1. With just three seconds left in the half, the Golden Eagles struck again as Zack Thomas finished a pass from Ryan Phillips for a 5-1 lead at the break.
The Bears notched their second goal just over five minutes into the final period. Senior captain Alessio Vitale (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) scored on a pass from Minsker to make it 5-2. In the 67th minute, LaPietra recorded his third assist as Dan Turchan scored for Brockport to reclaim the four-goal lead. At 76:08, Potsdam freshman defender Chris Schrum (Roosevelt Island, N.Y./Millenium) made it 6-3 with an assist from sophomore forward Stephen Auyer (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego). With 7:51 left, Chris O'Gorman struck on a pass from Mark Sylvia to close the scoring at 7-3.
In goal, senior Stefan Sloma (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) went the distance for the Bears and finished with two saves. Sullivan played the first half for Brockport, allowing a goal and making five saves. Max Drexler finished the game for the Golden Eagles, allowing two goals and making four stops. Potsdam outshot Brockport 18-17, but the Golden Eagles held a 10-6 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bears can still qualify for a playoff spot with a Geneseo loss to Plattsburgh or a Buffalo State loss to New Paltz. A possible SUNYAC playoff game would be held at the higher seed next Saturday, Nov. 2.
