POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (3-9-4, 1-4-4 SUNYAC) needed a win and some help to grab the final SUNYAC playoff spot, but fell short in a heartbreaking 2-1 double-overtime loss to visiting Geneseo (6-8-2, 4-4-1). Blue Knight sophomore midfielder Richard Bellusci scored the game-winner in the 105th minute after Bears sophomore forward Eduardo Figueroa had tied the game in the 88th minute.

Potsdam outshot Geneseo 6-4 in a tightly contested first half. Both teams kept most of the play in midfield and few scoring chances were created. The goalies handled everything that got through to them. Blue Knight senior goalie Nick Vogel finished the scoreless period with three saves and Bears senior goalie Joseph Glackin had one.

Bellusci nearly put Geneseo out in front just 1:09 into the second half, but Glackin dove to his left to smother the midfielder's shot. The game became more physical in the second half as the offenses opened up the contest. The Blue Knights were awarded a direct kick at 74:58 and senior midfielder Alex Stephan ripped the ball into the upper left corner of the goal. It appeared that Geneseo, which also needed a win for a playoff spot, would hang on for the shutout, but they couldn't contain Figueroa. With just 2:42 left, freshman forward James Turcott sent a long throw in into the box and Figueroa buried it.

Geneseo built momentum in the first overtime period and nearly won the game with a goal only to have it called back due to offsides. The Blue Knights outshot Potsdam 4-1 in the first 10 minute extra period, but neither side was able to put the ball on goal. In the second overtime, Figueroa nearly broke free for a breakaway in the 104th minute, but was whistled for being offsides. Just a minute later Bellusci finished a pass from sophomore forward Neil Allen (Pittsford, N.Y./Sutherland) to put Geneseo into the playoffs.

Vogel matched Glackin with five saves to earn the win. The Blue Knights outshot the Bears 19-15, but Potsdam held a 4-1 advantage in corners.

The Bears look to finish the season strong on Tuesday, as they head across town for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Clarkson Golden Knights.
