POTSDAM, N.Y.- Senior Tom Benedetto (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) scores on a penalty kick to lead the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (6-2-1, 0-0-1) to a 1-1 tie following double-overtime against conference foe SUNY Plattsburgh (8-1-1,0-0-1).

The Bears and Cardinals kept play in the middle of the field for the first quarter of the half. Neither team got a shot off until Benedetto scored on a called penalty kick at 11:46. This marked his fourth goal of the season. Plattsburgh answered at 23:29, when Ethan Votraw made a cross, but it was deflected in the middle of Potsdam's defense. A touch shot by Alexis Archilla slipped by senior goalie Jess Kohler (Middletown, N.Y./Tompkins-Cortland C.C.) to tie the score at one apiece. The Cardinals held the advantage 7-2 in shots and corner kicks 3-1 at the end of the half.

The score remained unchanged through the second half with Potsdam putting pressure on Plattsburgh's defense with five shots to their three. The Cardinals picked up the pace on the offensive end in the first overtime, but Kohler stayed tough with two saves. Both teams seemed to be running out of gas during the second half with Plattsburgh getting the only two shots off with another save by Kohler. The contest ended in a stalemate with neither team being able to put one past the goalies.

Kohler ended the game with eight saves while his counterpart Mitchell Jordan finished with two saves.

The Cardinals finished with 17 shots with the Bears firing eight at Jordan. Plattsburgh edged the Bears in corner kicks 6-5.

The Bears are back in action next Friday when they compete against Oswego State during Potsdam's first homecoming weekend at 3 p.m.
