CANTON, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (2-4) scored five second quarter goals en route to an 11-7 road victory at SUNY Canton (3-6) on a rainy Tuesday evening. Junior midfielder Nick Orsini (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) led the Bears with four goals and an assist and senior attackman Berkley Stone (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) had three goals and an assist. Senior goalie Jack Bezek (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) made 11 saves for the win. Potsdam dominated the faceoff circle, winning 17 of 21 attempts.

Orsini set up senior captain Matt Moran (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) at 9:39 of the first quarter to open the scoring. After Josh Yelvington tied the game six minutes later, Stone made it 2-1 at 2:37. The Roos struck for two goals in 31 seconds to capture a 3-2 lead after 15 minutes. Luke DeGaetano tied the game at 0:32 and Trenton Yule put Canton up for the only time in the game with just a second left in the quarter.

The lead lasted only 39 seconds as the Bears opened the second quarter on a 5-0 run. Freshman attackman Nick Henrie (Massena, N.Y./Massena) fed Moran for his second of the game at 14:22. Orsini buried his second at 10:34 and Potsdam never trailed again. Freshman midfielder Josh Huiatt (Lisbon, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) made it 5-3 at 4:27 with an assist from junior attackman Eric Soderquist (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown). Stone scored his second with a helper from Henrie, while Potsdam was a man up just 30 seconds later. Stone then fed Orsini at 2:44 to close the run and put the Bears up 7-3. Canton countered with goals from Yelvington and Yule in a 39-second span and trimmed the lead to 7-5 at the half.

Soderquist found Henrie in front of the net with 5:11 remaining in the third quarter. After Cam Carter got one back for the Roos, Henrie notched his third assist of the day on Stones' third goal.

Yule scored his third of the day, at 11:27 to give the Roos hope at 9-7, but Orsini answered 25 seconds later and again at 9:29 to thwart the comeback attempt.

Kody Kocsis made 20 saves for the Kangaroos.

Potsdam outshot Canton 57-26 and picked up a season-high 58 ground balls to the Roos' 27. Junior Marc Leveroni (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) was 15-4 in faceoff attempts. Sophomore long-stick midfielder Colby Chapman (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) had a game-high eight ground balls and four caused turnovers. Henrie and Stone also collected eight ground balls.

The Bears head to SUNY Oneonta on Saturday for a 1 p.m. SUNYAC battle with the Red Dragons.
