POTSDAM, N.Y.-The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (2-5) shut out Kean University (7-2) for the final 32:27, but fell a goal short in an 11-10 loss to the Cougars. Senior attackman Eric Soderquist (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) had a game-high six points on four goals and two assists. His 142 points (91g, 51a) tie him for seventh on the program's scoring list with Joe Losurdo '97. Sophomore midfielder Josh Huiatt (Lisbon, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) tied a career high with two goals and three assists for five points.

The Bears got off to a lightning quick start in the contest. Senior Marc Leveroni (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) won the opening faceoff as Huiatt picked up the ground ball. Huiatt took a few quick steps and found Soderquist at the side of the net and he ripped it past Cougars freshman goalie Thomas Francy (Keyport, N.J./Old Bridge) just 13 seconds into the contest. Soderquist made it 2-0 at the 11:10 mark, but Kean answered with a 7-2 run. Kean senior attackman Tom Kelly (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) and junior midfielder Tyler Roberto (Hamilton, N.Y./Notre Dame) scored in succession at 9:40 and 8:28 before Soderquist netted his third at 6:21 to give Potsdam its last lead. Kean junior midfielder Mike Snellen (Glen Gardener, N.J./Voorhees) and sophomore midfielder Cole Blackley (Erma, N.J./Lower Cape May) struck at 4:39 and 0:54 and the Cougars led 4-3 after 15 minutes.

Kean's offense ignited in the second quarter, outscoring the Bears 7-3. Soderquist tied the game a final time at 13:20, but the Cougars netted the next three in a five-minute span. Sophomore attackman Andrew Yenesel (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls), Roberto and Blackley found the back of the net at 12:06, 10:43 and 7:15, respectively for a 7-4 advantage. Huiatt stopped the run at 6:06, but sophomore attackman Jake Frankovits (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic) started a new one 19 seconds later. Kelly followed Frankovits with two in a row at 4:19 and 3:52 and Blackley added another at 2:27 for a commanding 11-5 lead. Kean wouldn't score again. Huiatt set up senior midfielder Nick Orsini (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) six second before the half and Potsdam trailed by five at the break.

Soderquist fed junior midfielder Gabe Carbone (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) at 11:52 and Huiatt at 6:40 for the only goals of the third quarter. The Bears were down just 11-8 heading into the final 15 minutes.

Huiatt assisted on senior attackman Lukas Baildon's (Berlin, Germany/JFKS Berlin) marker to close the gap to two at 9:58. The deficit remained unchanged until the 1:40 mark when junior midfielder Ryan Waldron (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) made it 11-10. Sophomore Luke Vitale (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlow) won the ensuing faceoff and Potsdam called timeout with 1:01 on the clock. Out of the break, Orsini and Soderquist each fired wide. After the ball was knocked loose, Soderquist scooped it up with 13 seconds left and cut to the net. He was tripped by a defender and the ball was flung out of danger by the Cougars.

Bears junior goalie Zach Sheridan (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) was tagged with the loss after allowing seven goals and making 12 saves in 52:45. Junior Sean Coe (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) stopped a shot and allowed four goals in 7:15. Francy finished with 15 saves to earn the victory.

Potsdam outshot Kean 41-35 and finished with a 26-25 edge in ground balls. Huiatt finished with a game-high eight ground balls and junior long-stick middie Colby Chapman (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) collected three ground balls and caused two turnovers. Leveroni finished with six faceoff wins and Vitale won five of his nine chances.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday night when they host Castleton University at 7 p.m.
