MORRISVILLE, N.Y.—Senior goalie Ryan Duffy (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) made a career-high 16 saves and five different Bears provided the offense as the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (3-1) downed Morrisville State (4-2) 5-3 on Wednesday afternoon.

Potsdam jumped on the board just 2:23 into the contest as senior captain Rob Kunz (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The fast start was misleading, as goals were hard to come by throughout the game. Six minutes later, the Mustangs got even on a tally from Jeremy Beresovoy and the first quarter ended in a 1-1 draw.

Senior captain Ryan McConnell (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) put Potsdam back in front for good 59 seconds into the second period and fellow senior captain Derek Frost (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville East) capped the first half scoring with an unassisted marker with just six seconds remaining. The Mustangs put five shots on goal in the quarter, but Duffy turned each aside. The Bears' goalie had seven saves through the first 30 minutes of the contest.

Sophomore midfielder Matt Kennedy (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) extended the Bears' lead to three with a goal at 7:45 of the third quarter. Three minutes later, freshman attackman Matt Moran (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) increased the advantage to 5-1 with his third collegiate goal. Potsdam edged Morrisville 13-11 on shots in the period and Duffy handled all four Mustang attempts that came his way.

Just under three minutes into the final period, Morrisville got back to within 5-2 as John Sherlock struck for the Mustangs. The comeback attempt continued with a goal from Eliud Evans at 5:57 to make it a two-goal contest. However, Duffy stuffed Morrisville's final two chances to close the door on the 5-3 victory.

Chris Fiore made nine saves in a losing cause for the Mustangs. Sophomore Kyle Hauk (Sackets Harbor, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) won six of his 10 faceoffs for Potsdam. Morrisville outshot the Bears 41-30 and finished with a 30-21 advantage in ground balls. The Mustangs were 0-4 on the man advantage and Potsdam was just 0-1.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they travel to SUNY Cortland for a neutral site contest against Kean University at 4 p.m.
