CASTLETON, VT.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (4-2) completed its four-game road trip with an 11-8 victory over Castleton State (5-3) on Saturday afternoon. Juniors Rob Kunz (2g-2a) and Derek Frost (3g-0a) led the Bears offense.
Potsdam raced out to a 5-0 lead over the first 13 minutes of the contest. Frost opened the scoring with an assist from freshman midfielder Matt Kennedy at just 1:55 into the game. At 11:11, Frost struck again for a man-up goal with a helper from Kunz. Senior captain Brady Fremont, junior attackman Jeff Seager and freshman midfielder Pat Bonafede scored the next three to cap the run. Sam Bailey got the Spartans on the board at the 1:16 mark and scored the only goal of the second quarter to cut the Bears' lead to 5-2 at the half.
After Kunz scored at 12:36 of the third quarter with an assist from senior attackman Kyle Nicholas to make it 6-2, Castleton got it's offense moving. Alex Green and Zach Davidson got the Spartans back to within two at the 7:13 mark. Less than two minutes later, Frost completed his hat trick with another man-up goal to slow Castleton's momentum. However, Nohea King and Luke Titus each scored in the last minute of the quarter and Potsdam's lead was just 7-6 after 45 minutes.
Bears' senior midfielder Pat Morrill continued his hot streak with two in a row to open the final quarter. Junior midfielder Jared Flath capped the mini run at 12:14 with an unassisted tally and extended Potsdam's lead to 10-6. The Spartan's answered one last time on goals from Will Stuhler and Green to get within two, but Kunz tacked on a final goal with 3:20 remaining to close the scoring at 11-8.
In goal, senior captain Stefan Sloma stopped 11 shots in the first 58:19 to earn his fourth win of the season. Junior goalie Ryan Duffy made his Bears' debut in the final 1:41, stopping the only shot he faced. Castleton goalie Peter Latulippe also finished with 11 saves in a losing cause.
Potsdam outshot the Spartans 53-33, but Castleton collected 43 ground balls to the Bears'28. Potsdam was 2-7 in extra-man opportunities, while the Spartans were 0-7.
The Bears return home to open SUNYAC play against Brockport next Saturday, April 6, for a 1:30 p.m. showdown with the Golden Eagles. Potsdam is 10-1 in its last 11 meetings with Brockport, including one-goal victories in the last three contests.
