ONEONTA, N.Y. — The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (3-4, 1-1 SUNYAC) defeated SUNY Oneonta (3-7, 0-2 SUNYAC) 11-10 in a back-and-forth, overtime thriller Saturday afternoon. Senior midfielder Casey Boulio (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) and junior attackman Eric Soderquist (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) each scored three goals, while senior captain Matt Moran (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) had a career-high four assists.

The game was scoreless through the first three minutes, when Soderquist buried his 11th goal of the season. Oneonta answered with a goal from Ryan Curley with 8:34 left in the first. In a three-minute span midway through the first, the Bears fired 14 shots until Soderquist scored his second of the day. Less than a minute later the Red Dragons responded with a goal of their own from Jimmy Kickel.

The battle continued in the second when freshman attackman Nick Henrie (Massena, N.Y./Massena) scored off junior midfielder Nick Orsini's (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) pass. The lead was short as Nick Eiseman tied the game at three. With under four minutes to go in the half, Potsdam took advantage of a man up situation. Senior attackman Berkley Stone (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) finished a feed from Soderquist. Oneonta's Curley scored the equalizer, making both teams even at the half.

Similar to the first, the third quarter was scoreless through the first three minutes, until Orsini scored off an assist from Moran. Moran then got his third assist of the day when Stone scored at 6:21, giving the Bears a 6-4 lead. The Red Dragons ended the quarter with five shots on goal, scoring two. The two goals came from TJ Kilmetis and Kickel.

Oneonta continued the run as Curley scored his third of the day, giving his team the lead for the first time. However, the lead only lasted 50 seconds as Orsini recorded his second goal of the game. With 11:30 left in the fourth Boulio got the lead back with his third goal of the season. Oneonta then had AJ Solomito and Stephen Panno score the next two goals, giving them a 9-8 lead with 8:31 left to play. Four minutes later, Boulio scored his second of the game, tying the game at nine. Solomito scored again for the Red Dragons, but Boulio got the hat trick and sent the game into overtime tied at 10.

The overtime was short and controlled by the Bears. Junior Marc Leveroni (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) won the pivotal opening faceoff. Soderquist was able to get the ground ball and bring it into the offensive zone before calling a time out. Seven seconds later, Soderquist received the ball from Boulio and scored the game-winning goal with 3:36 left.

Potsdam senior goalie Jack Bezek (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) allowed 10 goals and made 11 save for the victory. Oneonta's goalie Andrew Helfman allowed 11 goals and stopped 10 shots. Curley had three goals and an assist, while Kickel and Solomito both had two goals and an assist.

The Bears will play again tomorrow at 1 p.m. as they travel to Castleton.
