POTSDAM, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team fell to No. 5 Plattsburgh State by a score of 4-1. Vick Schlueter scored two goals for the Cardinals and Mike Grace added two assists.

Plattsburgh State (2-0, 2-0 SUNYAC) controlled play throughout the first period and went into intermission with 2-0 lead. The game was scoreless for over 16 minutes before Plattsburgh State broke through. The first score came off the stick off Mark Constantine who rebounded Grace’s slap shot and found the back of the net. Plattsburgh would strike again with only 53 seconds remaining in the period when Schlueter took an open puck in front of the net and beat freshman goalie Dylan Ellis. Ellis would keep the game close with 17 saves in the period.

Plattsburgh kept the heat on Potsdam early in the second period as they would capitalize on a power play opportunity. Schlueter scored at 3:06 on an assist from Alex Jensen and Grace. The Bears (1-2, 0-2) would counter with a good scoring chance from freshman Carlo Ahee on an odd man rush but was denied by goalie Josh Leis who made 13 saves in the period.

The Bears had an early break away opportunity in the third period, but sophomore Mike Arnoldwas pulled down from behind and drew an interference penalty. Potsdam was unable to convert on the power play and the Cardinals would tack on another their last goal at the 5:19 mark on a goal from Kyle Kudroch. The Bears would get on the scoreboard 17:40 into the period when sophomore Adam Place was set up by senior Sy Nutkevitch and freshman Erick Ware.

For the game, Ellis finished with 37 saves for the Bears and Leis added 20 for the Cardinals.

Potsdam Head Coach Jay Bernard took was disappointed with the result but did see some positives in his teams play.

“I was pleased with effort,” Bernard said. “We failed to execute at a high level but we never stopped fighting. I was happy to see us get a hard working goal late in the game and I think our team culture is where we want it to be in order to improve throughout the year.”

The Bears return to action on Friday, Nov. 11 when they travel to Buffalo State. The puck will drop at 7 p.m.
