POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team has been picked to finish sixth in the State University of New York Athletic Conference pre-season coaches' poll. Last year, the Bears were 8-16-2 (6-10 SUNYAC) and qualified for the playoffs for the second time in the last three seasons.
Last year's regular season champions, the Oswego State Lakers, were tabbed to finish atop the league again with 63 points, including seven first place votes. 2011-12 tournament champion Plattsburgh was second in the voting with 58 points, including two first place votes. The Bears garnered 27 points for sixth place.
The 2012-13 Bears are led by senior captains Matt Viola and Brett Waters and junior assistant captains Mike Arnold and Nick Avgerinos. Potsdam returns 15 letterwinners and adds 10 new faces.
Potsdam opens its season away from Maxcy Ice Arena at Massena Arena against Division II Saint Michael's at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26. The Bears are 7-0 all-time against the Purple Knights. The last meeting was a 9-4 victory at Maxcy on Oct. 30, 1999.
