Bears men's basketball falls to Red Dragons

POTSDAM, N.Y.- SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (2-19, 1-14 SUNYAC) fell to SUNY Cortland (16-7, 9-7 SUNYAC) 87-61 Saturday afternoon at Corey Gymnasium. The Bears were led by senior captain Zac Adams (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) and senior guard Tom Graf (Elbridge, N.Y./Jordan-Elbridge), who each finished with 13 points on the day. Lamard Herron paced the Red Dragons with 15 points and four assists.

Potsdam struggled to find their offensive shots in the opening 20 minutes, but managed to shoot 52-percent from the field. Cortland was on point, shooting 49-percent from the floor while hitting 37 field goals. The Red Dragons went on a 21-10 run to start the first half before being capped by a jumper from Cortland's Justin Prendergast. The Bears matched up well with the Red Dragons the reminder of the first half with Cortland holding the slight edge. The Red Dragons took the 46-29 lead into halftime.

Cortland hit the ground running in the second half as the Red Dragons continued to build their lead by going on a 28-14 run that lasted over the first 13 minutes. Graf knocked down a 3-pointer to start a 10-5 mini run for the Bears that was capped by two free throws from junior guard Mitch Lamerson (Dansville, N.Y./Dansville) at 4:34. Play evened out during the final minutes of the contest, but Cortland held on to take the 87-61 win.

Junior guard Marquis Lee (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth) added six points, while senior forward Conor Engle (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) and senior guard Rishawd Hendricks (Brooklyn, N.Y./Mount Zion Christian Academy) each tallied five points. Shayne Martinez finished with 13 points and T.J. Hefele added 11 points and five boards.

Potsdam is back in action Tuesday, Feb. 17, as they face SUNY Plattsburgh at 5:30 p.m. at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
