POTSDAM, N.Y.—Junior pitchers Megan Johnson and Ashley Thayer each recorded shutout victories in the SUNY Potsdam softball team's (10-18) sweep of SUNY Canton (13-19) on Tuesday afternoon. The Bears downed the Kangaroos 3-0 in the opener and 8-0 in the finale. Johnson's third shutout of the season sets a Potsdam single-season record.

Game one was a pitcher's duel between Johnson and SUNY Canton senior pitcher Tina DeLuca. Potsdam scored the only run it needed in the bottom of the first as junior Brittany Thivierge singled to left field to score senior captain Heather Johnson. The Bears tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Kalshia White and Heather Johnson each scored on an error to close the scoring at 3-0.

Johnson (4-3) struck out seven in seven innings while allowing just one hit to Canton junior Destiny Petty. The shutout was Johnson's second in as many days.

DeLuca (8-8) was the tough luck loser, allowing just three hits and one earned run over six innings.

Potsdam's bats woke up in game two, hammering Canton 8-0 to finish the sweep. Back-to-back RBI singles from sophomore Carissa Cornwell and freshman Samantha Cohn put the Bears up 2-0 in the second. Timely hitting and spotty Kangaroo defense allowed Potsdam to erupt for six runs in the bottom of the second to put the game away. Thayer and Thivierge each recorded RBI singles and the Bears added four more runs on Canton errors. Thayer retired the Roos in order in the top of the fourth and stranded two runners in the fifth to seal the victory in just five innings.

Thayer improved to 4-7 on the season with the two-hit shutout. She struck out 10 and walked just one over the five innings. Nine different Bears notched all of Potsdam's hits, but Cornwell had two runs scored to go with her RBI.

DeLuca (8-9) fell in the second game as well. Just four of the eight runs she allowed were earned.

Potsdam returns to conference play on Friday as Fredonia comes to town for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
