Bears hold off Gators 3-2 for best start in volleyball program history

ALBANY, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (8-0) opened up a 2-0 lead over the Sage Colleges (3-7) before finishing off the Gators 3-2 on Day 1 of the Sage Tournament. The Bears are now 8-0, topping the 2000 team (7-0) for best start in program history.

Potsdam won the first two sets in tight fashion by 25-22 and 25-19 counts. They fell behind 19-12 in set three before rallying to tie at 22-22. However, the Gators took the set 25-23. Sage opened up a sizable lead in set four and never looked back for the 25-14 win to tie the match. The teams were even until it was 10-10 in the fifth set. Then the Bears pulled away for a 15-11 decision to close out the match.

Juniors Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) and Kelsey Tompkins (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) paced Potsdam's offense with 13 kills apiece. Topf also had 15 digs and two aces, while Tompkins added two blocks. Junior outside hitter Kelsea Healis (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate) registered 12 kills and two aces. Freshman outside hitter Gabrielle Scott (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) totaled 19 digs, four aces and three blocks. Senior libero Sloane Campbell (Scotia, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) posted 32 digs and sophomore setter Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) had a season-high 46 assists. Junior middle hitter Megan Smith (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) contributed three blocks.

Tomorrow, the Bears head to Union College for a 1 p.m. match with Mount Saint Vincent and a 3 p.m. contest with the host Dutchwomen.
