BROCKPORT, N.Y.--- The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (8-2, 1-1 SUNYAC) defeated Brockport (4-4, 1-1) 2-1 on Saturday. Senior midfielder Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y. / Brockport) had a goal and an assist for the Bears and freshman forward Mackenzie Bowie (Mechanicville, N.Y. / Mechanicville) also scored. Brockport edged Potsdam in shots (17-14) and corner kicks (5-3) but they could not solve the Bears defense this afternoon.
The Bears started off the game strong on both sides of the ball. Junior goalie Delphine Léonard (Anjou, Quebec/Dawson College Prep) made two saves in the early stages. About a minute after Léonard's second save, Bowie scored the first goal for the Bears at 19:38 with the assist from Falsion for the 1-0 advantage. The Golden Eagles' goalie Kimberly Lubanski (Leicester, N.Y./York) was also tested early, stopping two shots from Bowie and finishing the half with four saves. Brockport didn't have the same success on the offensive end as they couldn't get anything past Léonard. Falsion extended the lead for the visitors at 44:43, scoring with an assist from senior midfielder Rylie Murray (Berkley, Mich. / Berkley). The Bears took the 2-0 lead into the second half.
The Golden Eagles came out more aggressive in this period, generating corner kicks and more scoring opportunities. The pressure paid at 65:14 when senior forward Brianna Sciacca (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) scored to close the gap to one. This proved to be the last goal of the game as both team's goalkeepers and defense were for the remainder of the game. Potsdam came away with the win by matching the Eagles' intensity as time wound down.
Brockport's Lubanski had a good showing with eight saves, while Léonard finished with nine.
Falsion now has 91 points on 39 goals and 13 assists, trailing all-time scoring leader Jodi Ziemba '07 by just 11. Murray's assist moves her into a tie for sixth place with Cortney Poirier '10 with 14 goals and 27 assists for 55 points.
Potsdam is now off until Saturday, when the Bears travel to Plattsburgh for a 1 p.m. showdown.
