FREDONIA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (7-6, 0-1 SUNYAC) was defeated by Fredonia State (7-5-1, 1-0) 15-1 in its SUNYAC opener Friday afternoon. Game 2 was scoreless when it was suspended after 4 innings.
Freshman shortstop Sami Brown led off the game with a single. With two outs in the top of the first senior pitcher Brittany Pawlowski drove in Brown with an RBI single to put the Bears up 1-0. Blue Devil Lauren Lawson tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the first and Anne Wasik drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the second. Gabrielle Ciccarello hit a three-run homer in Fredonia’s four-run third inning and the Blue Devils led 6-1. Fredonia broke the game open with a nine-run fourth and the game ended after Potsdam failed to score in the top of the fifth.
Sophomore third baseman Molly McCuin finished with two hits for the Bears. Pawlowski pitched 2.2 innings for Potsdam, allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits and striking out two. Sophomore Megan Johnson went the final inning and a third allowing nine runs, five earned, on five hits and six walks.
Ashley LaPorta picked up the win, allowing one run on five hits, while striking out four. Larson led the Blue Devils offensively, going 4-4 with four RBI’s.
“We didn’t pitch well. Brittany got the ball the up and we got hit hard. We kicked the ball around in the fourth inning and things didn’t go our way,” said Bears Head Coach Shannon Dillabough. “We did have our chances offensively, but we couldn’t get that big hit. We need to be more aggressive with runners in scoring position.
In game 2, Potsdam sophomore pitcher Ashley Thayer was cruising through four innings, allowing just a bunt single when heavy rain and lightning forced the contest to be suspended.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow at noon, when they travel to Buffalo State to take on the Bengals in a twin bill. Potsdam may return to Fredonia after completion of the two games in Buffalo.
