Bears' dominant defense propels Potsdam to 10-8 men's lacrosse road victory against Brockport

The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team clenched their collective fists through a dominant first quarter, received another strong defensive backing and the Bears went on the road and picked up an important 10-8 conference victory against Brockport on Saturday afternoon.

Three days after setting a career-high for saves in a game with 19 in an exhilarating 8-7 win against SUNYAC rival Plattsburgh, senior goalie Ryan Duffy (Liverpool, N.Y. / Liverpool) readjusted his personal high-water mark once again by turning aside 21 shots to help the Bears win their fourth consecutive game.

Duffy allowed just seven goals on 28 shots in 59:20 minutes of action for a stealth .750 save percentage.

During the winning streak, Potsdam (8-3, 2-1 SUNYAC) has outscored the opposition 51-24 in wins over SUNY Canton, Castleton State, Plattsburgh and Brockport.

The Bears got off to just the start that they were seeking as sophomore Matt Kennedy (Clay, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse) scored twice while senior Rob Kunz (Watertown, N.Y. / Immaculate Heart), sophomore Pat Bonafede (Churchville, N.Y. / Churchville-Chili) and freshman Berkley Stone (Madison, Conn. / Daniel Hand) all found the net as well to give Potsdam a 5-1 advantage after the first quarter.

Kunz kept pressure on the Golden Eagles' defense by firing a season-high 10 shots in the game and finished with a hat trick. Kunz leads the team in goals with 19 on the season.

Bonafede and Kennedy each tallied two goals and an assist apiece as well while Stone scored twice and sophomore Ed Doherty (Amherst, N.Y. / Amherst) continued his breakout campaign by picking up his 18th goal of the season.

Doherty has scored at least once in nine of 11 games thus far after scoring just seven goals all of last season.

The Golden Eagles (4-7, 1-3 SUNYAC) were able to stay competitive by winning 14 of 21 face offs. Justin Cook paced Brockport with three goals while Steve Brissette added two scores. Brockport held a robust 50-30 shots advantage and a 29-18 shots on goal advantage, but were foiled by Duffy and the Potsdam defense.

Potsdam will return home to Maxcy Turf Field to take on St. Lawrence in a nonconference tilt on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
