Bears cross country competes at XC Only Championship

GENEVA, N.Y. - The SUNY Potsdam men's and women's cross country teams traveled south this past weekend to compete in the Cross Country Only Championship at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. The men's team finished in 10th and the women's team finished in 13th. Clarkson University won the men's competition while SUNY ESF took it home for the women.

Junior Kevin Johnson (Camden, N.Y. / Camden) led the Bear's men with an 8k time of 29:42. Freshman Ben Shelton (Rochester, N.Y. / Irondequoit) and senior Joseph Rafter (Fort Covington, N.Y. / Brasher Falls) were next with times of 30:13 and 31:41. Sophomore Ryan Sullivan (Rochester, N.Y. / Irondequoit) and freshman Christopher Cruz (Albany, N.Y. / Albany) rounded out Potsdam's top five with times of 32:15 and 32:50. Also competing for the Bears' men were seniors Jonathan Doane (Camden, N.Y. / Camden) and Brett Wunsch (Colonie, N.Y. / Colonie Central) with times of 34:20 and 35:38.

Junior Olivia Rehm (Grahamsville, N.Y. / Tri-Valley) came out on top for the Bears' women with a 5k time of 22:05. Sophomore Sarah Laporta, (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y. / Sachem East) junior Carissa Cuccia, (Goshen, N.Y. / Goshen) and sophomore Mariam Cisse (Manhattan, N.Y. / A. Philip Randolph) finished next with times of 23:12, 23:45, and 23:48. Senior Becky Dukett (Tupper Lake, N.Y. / Tupper Lake) topped off the Bears' top five with a time of 25:33. Freshmen Nina Purkiss (Central Square, N.Y. / Paul V. Moore) and Brianna Inman (Liverpool, N.Y. / Liverpool) also competed for the Bears and posted times of 26:19 and 26:58.

The Bears are back in action on Nov. 1, as they head to Brockport, N.Y. to take on the SUNYAC Championship.
