BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (11-8) swept Alfred University (1-12) in three straight sets on the first day of the Brockport Invitational. Junior setter Jenna Blujus gave the Bears a boost in the service game to clinch the victory.
Potsdam dominated the court in the first two sets of the match. Tough serving by Blujus, freshman outside hitter Rachel Auerbach, and sophomore outside hitter Aliza Fields gave the Bears the advantage. Potsdam downed Alfred 25-9 in the first set, swinging all the momentum in their favor. The second set was similar to the first as the Bears rolled to a 25-10 decision. The Saxons fought back in the third set but could not stop the Potsdam charge, losing 25-19.
Junior outside hitter Dakota Pruiss led the Bears attack with nine kills. Senior middle hitter Kayla Howard followed with eight kills of her own. Blujus finished with 35 assists, six service aces, and six digs. Fields contributed eight digs and Senior Jill Dye added seven.
“I am very happy with how our team came out today,” said Head Coach Steve Pike. “We attacked them with our serving and we took good care of the ball. I thought Jenna ran a great offense. She was able to give our hitters one on one or one on none situations during the match. Also, we had some great defense by Aliza Fields, she did a good job and really improved on her defense.”
The Bears are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 10 a.m. for Day Two of the Brockport Invitational.
