COLCHESTER, Vt.—Sophomore forwards Jessica Silveira and Jenn Crawford each scored twice as the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (4-6-1) defeated St. Michael’s College (0-9-1) 6-2 for the second day in a row. Junior goaltender Jen Conophy (Glenmont, N.Y./Albany Ice Cats) made 34 saves for the win.
Crawford got the only goal of the first period on the power play at the 10:43 mark. Senior captain Annmarie Lewis and freshman forward Izzy Fayerman each assisted on the goal.
The Purple Knights evened the score on the man advantage at 9:56 of the second period with a marker from Darah Thomas. Senior assistant captain Caitlin Manahan gave the Bears the lead for good two minutes later on assists from Silveira and senior captain Brandi Atwell. Lewis set up Crawford for the eventual game-winner with 1:09 left in the period.
Just 34 seconds into the final period, Madelena Santore brought St. Michael’s back to within 3-2, but that would be as close as the Purple Knights would get. Silveira scored the next two straight at 3:50 and 7:37 to open up a 5-2 Potsdam lead. Junior forward Katie Komsa closed the scoring with 1:31 left.
The Bears outshot St. Michael’s 41-36 and finished 2-2 on the power play.
Potsdam is off until Jan. 6, 2012, when the Bears host North Country rival Plattsburgh at 3 p.m.
