POTSDAM, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam men’s soccer team dispatched of SUNY Cortland 2-0. The win capped a SUNYAC weekend sweep for the Bears, their first since beating Buffalo St. and Fredonia St. Oct. 11-12, 2002. Eduardo Figueroa had a hand in both scores with a goal and an assist.

The first half of action was evenly played with the shots being 7-6 in favor of Cortland. The Red Dragons (1-5-5, 0-2-2 SUNYAC) looked like they may get on the scoreboard first, but junior goal keeper Joseph Glackin made stops on consecutive scoring opportunities and kept the game even. He would finish the game with four saves and earn his ninth career shutout.

The Bears (5-4-2, 2-0-1) would have a golden opportunity to take the lead early in the second half as Figueroa got a shot past the Red Dragons goal keeper. However, defender Lucas Wear slid in at the last second and sent the ball out-of-bounds on a great defensive effort. Figueroa wouldn’t miss on his next opportunity in the game’s 65th minute as he made a sensational play and beat multiple Cortland defenders before finding the back of the net. The score was his fifth of the season, giving him the team lead. Less than two minutes later, freshman Paul Gabriel would capitalize off a rebound and give the Bears a 2-0 advantage. The assist was Figueroa’s second of the season.

By not allowing the Red Dragons to score, SUNY Potsdam continued their impressive stretch of defense. The Bears have not allowed a goal in 303 minutes of action and have no SUNYAC opponent has scored on them.

“We are really tough to break down at the moment,” said head coach Adam Parker following the contest. “We are able to start our offense from our defense and create scoring opportunities.”

Potsdam will return to action with two road matches. The Bears will face Oneonta State at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7, and then take on the New Paltz Hawks at 1 p.m. the following afternoon.
