BROCKPORT, N.Y.- In their final game of the 2011-12 season, the SUNY Potsdam women’s basketball team (5-20, 3-15 SUNYAC) fell to Brockport by a final score of 61-52. Phoebe Byrnes scored 21 points and added three rebounds and three assists to ensure the victory.

The teams were evenly matched through the first 20 minutes. The game was tied six times and the lead changed hands on five occasions while neither team had a lead larger than five points. Sophomore Hannah Kmiecinski buried a three to give Potsdam their first lead of the half at 14-13 at the 11:58 mark. With the Golden Eagles (4-21, 1-17) leading 20-18, senior Sophie Parks hit a jumper to even the score with 7:06 remaining in the half. Brockport would score consecutive baskets but again the Bears tied it up. The Golden Eagles ended the half with five consecutive points to go into halftime with a narrow 29-24 lead. Phoebe Byrnes led Brockport with 10 points while junior Katy Briedis had six to pace the Bears. Potsdam’s tough defense forced Brockport into 11 first half turnovers.

Potsdam cut the lead to 33-31 thanks to a bucket by sophomore Jessica Kouzan (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder). The Golden Eagles answered with a 10-0 run to extend the lead to 43-31 with just over 13 minutes remaining. Adedoyin Akingba ended the Brockport run with a basket in the paint and Parks’ jumper cut the lead to single digits with 8:37 left. Byrnes would then score five straight points to give the Golden Eagles an 13-point lead. Potsdam twice cut the lead to five with under one minute left. After freshman Bailey Weigel hit a jumper, Kmiecinski stole the inbounds pass and dished to Parks who was fouled. Parks’ free throw cut the deficit to 56-52 with 33 seconds but Byrnes connected on two free throws that iced the game.

Parks scored 13 points in her final collegiate contest to lead the Bears and Weigel added 11 points and eight rebounds. Potsdam shot 36 percent from the field but could only convert 21 percent of their three point attempts.

Brockport shot 40 percent from the field and held a slight 38-36 advantage on the boards.
