Bartenstein's Career Day lifts Roos men's basketball past St. Joseph

(Canton, N.Y.)- Sophomore Scott Bartenstein (Potsdam, N.Y.) poured in a career-high 27 points leading a balanced team effort as the SUNY Canton men’s basketball team beat the College of St. Joseph (Vt.) 81-62 Saturday afternoon at Roos House.

Bartenstein came out firing in the first half as he netted 20 points in the first 20 minutes, shooting 8-for-9 from the field including a 4-for-5 effort from three-point range. Bartenstein finished his stellar afternoon with five 3-pointers, as he shot 11-for-14 from the field. He also collected five assists and four rebounds.

SUNY Canton (7-13), who won their second straight game, built a 41-35 lead at halftime, knocking down seven triples and shooting 54 percent from the floor. The Fighting Saints, after shooting 44 percent in the first half, cooled off significantly in the second half, shooting just 31 percent, including 1-for-11 from beyond the arc. The Roos had 24 assists on 32 made baskets, and won the rebounding battle 40-30.

Junior Khalid Vaughn (New York, N.Y.) came up three points shy of his first career triple-double as he was outstanding in distributing the ball finishing with seven points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists. Four other SUNY Canton players finished in double figures including senior Ryan Lamica (Constable, N.Y.) who had 17 points, six assists, five rebounds, and three steals. Junior Scott Dixon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 10 points, four rebounds and three tremendous blocks. Sophomore Tyler Ellison (New York, N.Y.) totaled 10 points and three rebounds, and sophomore Xzavier Fisher (Plymouth, Pa.) contributed 10 points and five rebounds.

St. Joseph was led by Josh Otway, who had 18 points and seven rebounds, and Dre Anderson added 15 points and two steals.

The Roos are next in action Feb. 9 and 10 when they travel back to Maine for games against the University of Maine at Augusta and Unity College.
