(Canton, N.Y.) Led by a balanced scoring attack the SUNY Canton men’s basketball team ran by the University of Maine at Presque Isle 68-45 Monday afternoon in Canton.

The Roos (7-4) had six players score at least six points led by junior forward Irving Cato (New York, N.Y.) who posted his second straight double-double and fifth this year with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Tyler Ellison (New York, N.Y.) added a season-high 17 points and four rebounds.

The Roos had to play catch up for most of the first half but thanks to excellent ball movement were able to push past the Owl in the final minutes. Ellison converted a layup with 4:19 left to tie the score at 21-21 and then the Roos finally took the lead on a Cato triple two possessions later. SUNY Canton would eventually lead 28-25 at halftime.

The Roos never trailed for the remainder of the game and used a 9-0 run five minutes into the second half to stretch the lead into double digits. The Owls did cut the lead down to eight points but three free throws from Ellison and another one from freshman Owen Luckie (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) pushed the lead back to double figures where it would stay for the rest of the contest.

Junior Ryan Lamica (Constable, N.Y.) and sophomore Scott Dixon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each had seven points, four rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Khalid Vaughn (New York, N.Y.) also had seven points to go along with three rebounds and three assists, and freshman Sean Perrin (Prescott, Ontario) added six points on a pair of 3s and two rebounds.

Gerardo Vasquez had 12 points for the Owls and Aaron Hutchins added 10.

The Roos are next in action on Saturday, Jan. 14 when they travel to SUNY ESF in Syracuse.
