Balance leads Union past Roos men’s soccer

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton men's soccer team put up a tough battle but visiting Union College earned a 3-0 road victory on Saturday afternoon.

Both teams played a hard fought first half as Union held a 5-2 shots on goal advantage. The Roos were whistled for a close foul call with just over a minute remaining in the opening half and it would lead to a 1-0 lead for the Dutchmen.

Junior captain Andrew Fontaine made it pay off as he curled a left footed shot off the ensuing direct kick just inside the right post past a diving Austin Lamay (Malone, NY). Union led 1-0 at intermission.

Union added an insurance marker in the 63rd minute when Another Kushiana played a through ball to Carl Faber who made it 2-0. The Roos had a great opportunity to get within one with 20 minutes remaining. Mouhamadou Cisse (Sacre Coeur, Dakar, Senegal) played a beautiful ball from midfield up the left side to Tyler Gallagher (Potsdam, NY). Gallagher beat his defender near the left end line and fired a shot near post that was turned aside by Jonathan Graziosi. Edward Malinoski, Jr. (Evans Mills, NY) got a quick touch on the rebound but Graziosi closed the door.

The Dutchmen added a third goal with just over a minute remaining. Jeremy Manus played a pass to Samuel Eddy at the top of the 18 who quickly delivered a ball to Matthew Gomes on his left. Gomes lasered a low shot just inside the left post.

Lamay stopped nine shots on the afternoon, while Graziosi made five stops for Union. The Roos are back in action on Wednesday when they visit Clarkson University at 6:00 p.m.
