Balance leads Roos men's basketball past Spartans in home opener, 82-68

Canton, NY – Six different players scored nine or more points as the SUNY Canton men's basketball team used tremendous offensive balance to earn an 82-68 victory v. visiting D'Youville college on Sunday afternoon in the Roos House.

Sam Annorh (Queens, NY) led all players with 18 points and added four assists in just 26 minutes of action. Romario Fletcher (Queens, NY) stuffed the statsheet withRomario Fletcher stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, 5 rebounds, 4 blocks and 4 steals on Sunday. 14 points, five rebounds, four blocks and four steals in just 23 minutes and Kam Peterkin (Harlem, NY) added 13 points on three three-pointers.

Vonallen Pickett (Brooklyn, NY) also scored in double figures with 11 points and Kazre Cummings (Providence, RI) and Khalil Bratton (Queens, NY) chipped in nine points apiece with Cummings adding a team-best seven boards.

The contest was extremely close throughout the opening 20 minutes but the Roos ended the half on a 4-0 run to take a 34-30 lead into intermission.

The Roos (3-0) picked up right where they left off using a 5-0 spurt out of halftime behind a layup from Annorh and three-pointer from Bratton to extend the lead to nine early in the second half.

SUNY Canton was in command throughout the final 20 minutes as the Spartans (1-4) never got closer than six points, while the Roos lead ballooned to as many as 16 (78-62) with 2:42 remaining.

The Roos took care of the ball committing just 10 turnovers compared to 18 for D'Youville which led to a 25-10 edge for the Roos in points off turnovers. SUNY Canton shot 40 percent from the field, while the Spartans hit on 38 percent of their field goal attempts.

Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (14) and Marcus Clarke (10) led D'Youville in double figures, while Zach Blask and Juan Rosales added nine points apiece.

The men's basketball team is back in action on Tuesday when it visits Utica College at 5 p.m.
