Cortland, NY – Jordan Ayers scored 12 points but the SUNY Canton men's basketball team dropped a 93-54 road decision at SUNY Cortland on Saturday afternoon.
Ayers was the lone Roos (0-2) player to finish in double figures as Joseph Werner and Danny Santana added nine and eight points, respectively. Victor Bakre also chipped in seven points and Ibu Smith pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
Justin Cooper led five players in double figures for the Red Dragons (2-0), while Ryan Schmadel, James Morales and Zach Lydon added 13 points apiece. Nicky Bonura chipped in 11 points, while Morales and Cooper dished out six assists each.
Canton held an early 3-2 lead following a Santana three-pointer 3:05 into the contest and that lead expanded to 8-5 following an Ayers layup in transition. Cortland used a 15-0 run to open up a 12-point lead as the hosts took a 50-25 lead into intermission.
Cortland cruised in the second half earning the 93-54 victory. The Red Dragons shot 51 percent from the field and scored 31 points off 20 SUNY Canton turnovers. Meanwhile, Cortland finished with just 11 turnovers.
The men's basketball team returns to the hardwood on Tuesday when it hosts St. Lawrence University at 3 p.m. in the Roos House.
