Canton, NY – Lora Ardoin (Houston, TX) scored just 1:38 into the game with host SUNY Canton down a skater to lead the women's hockey team to a 1-1 overtime tie against visiting SUNY Cortland on Friday evening. The Roos move to 0-2-1 on the season, while the Red Dragons sit at 1-1-1.

Just 1:18 into the game SUNY Canton sent a player to the penalty box and went on the penalty kill. Not only did they kill the penalty the Roos went on the attack as Ardoin skated into the offensive zone and circled behind the net from right to left. After coming out between the faceoff circles she fired a shot beating Red Dragon goaltender Kelly Farinella to her right for the early score.

SUNY Canton held an 8-5 shots on goal edge in the opening period taking a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard into the first intermission. Despite the Roos committing three penalties compared to just one for Cortland in the second frame SUNY Canton still outshot the Red Dragons 7-5 going 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. The Roos led 1-0 after two.

Cortland set a different tone to start the third period when Gina Tomei netted her first goal of the season off a pass from Niamh O'Connor. O'Connor moved the puck from right to left in front of goal where Tomei was able to beat a sprawled out Shayna Dominique (Mistissini, QUE). Eight minutes into the third period Dominique was forced to leave the contest with an injury as Alyssa Altschuler (Cheshire, CT) replaced her between the pipes.

The Roos had a glorious opportunity 4:30 into the frame to take the lead when Jessica Kistabish (Pikogan, QUE) made a beautiful deke to beat a defender and caught Farinella out of position but missed just wide of the net. SUNY Cortland had a majority of the opportunities in the third period holding an 11-5 shots on goal edge as the teams played to overtime.

The squads combined for just three total shots in the extra session as they finished in a 1-1 tie. Dominique turned aside 16 shots in the contest, while Altschuler made six saves in relief. Farinella made 20 saves for SUNY Cortland.

With a strong third period the Red Dragons held a slight 23-21 shots on goal edge in the contest. The Roos took a 31-27 advantage in the faceoff circle. The two teams combined to go 0-for-15 on the power play as the Roo goal came in the shorthanded variety and Red Dragon marker came at even-strength.

The two teams will have a rematch tomorrow as they square off again in the Roos House. The puck drops at 2:00 p.m
