Canton, NY – Visiting Alfred State College took a pair of games from the SUNY Canton baseball team to open up a three game weekend set on Saturday. The Pioneers (11-21) took the opener 5-2 before a 10-8 victory in the nightcap against the Roos (9-26).

Game 1

Alfred State scored three runs in the second and third to open up the early advantage. The Pioneers added two crucial insurance runs in the top of the seventh. SUNY Canton looked to rally in the bottom of the frame. Seth Douglas (Reedsburg, WI) ripped a two out triple to score Wilson Matos (Brooklyn, NY) from first. Matos would come home on a throwing error by the second baseman to get the Roos within 5-2, but a strike out ended the game.

Khalil Bratton (Queens, NY) took the loss on the mound giving up two earned runs in six innings of work. He struck out three and walked six. Keenan Shannon (Ballston Spa, NY) gave up two earned runs in one-third of relief action, while Casey Garcia (Miramar, FL) retired both batters he faced. Douglas led the Roos with two hits and an RBI, while Travis Schindler (West Islip, NY) also had a two hit outing.

Game 2

Each team scored one run in the opening inning of the nightcap but it was the second inning that saw a majority of the scoring as a combined 12 runs crossed the plate. After Alfred State opened up an 8-1 lead in the top half of the inning the Roos responded with five runs of their own.

Christian Nazario-Cruz (Naguabo, Puerto Rico) singled home Schindler. Douglas walked in Jesse Barton (Belle Glade, FL) and Jeremy Baez (Bronx, NY) used a 2 RBI base hit to score Nazario-Cruz and Matos. Chris Roenbeck (Plattsburgh, NY) rounded out the scoring in the frame with a sacrifice fly to left to plate Douglas.

The Pioneers stretched their lead to 10-6 in the third scoring on a double play and single. The Roos responded in the bottom half as Douglas scored Barton on a sacrifice fly and Baez plated Nazario-Cruz on an RBI single.

The Roos advanced a runner into scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, but neither team scored the rest of the way as Alfred State earned the two run victory.

Juan Rosa (Naguabo, Puerto Rico) took the loss on the hill tossing 1.2 innings giving up eight earned runs. He struck out two and walked four. Garcia and Jake St. Mary (Brushton, NY) both saw time in relief without surrendering a run and combining for six strike outs.

These two teams will play one nine-inning game on Sunday beginning at 12:00 p.m.
