#6 Saints men's squash sweeps past Hobart, Vassar

The nationally-ranked #6 St. Lawrence University men's squash team swept past Hobart and Vassar in its season-opening matches of the Liberty League Championships on Saturday at the Robie Squash Courts. The Saints, now 2-0, will look to earn victories in both of their matches tomorrow to capture their first conference crown since the 2006-07 season.

St. Lawrence will open the day with a match against Bard at 10:00 am, before taking on Rochester at 1:00pm. The Saints' top three against the Yellowjackets, playing in the glass court, will be broadcast live.

Several first-year students made their debuts in today's matches, including Moustafa Bayoumy, Mateo Vargas, Kingsley Amoako, Michael Edson and John Fisher. Bayoumy played in the top spot against Hobart, defeating Felipe Pantle 11-4, 11-3, 11-1.

Ibrahim Khan beat Billy Abrams in the two spot by the scores of 11-6, 11-1, 11-2, while Kyle Ogilvy defeated William Boyle 11-2, 11-1, 11-5 to round out the top three. Sebestian Riedelsheimer worked past McGee O'Neil at number four (11-5, 11-7, 11-2), while Anderson Good beat Beau Orchard in the fifth spot by the scores of 11-8, 11-8, 11-1.

Chris Fernandez handily defeated Danny Cabrera at six (11-1, 11-2, 11-2), while Mateo Vargas earned his first collegiate victory, defeating Scott Marcus, 11-3, 11-7, 11-1 at number seven.

In the eighth spot, Will Campo earned an 11-7, 11-8, 11-1 victory over Art Martella, while Tim Lasusa rounded out the top nine with a victory over Krittapat Pranich, 11-4, 11-6, 11-2.

Kingsley Amoako beat Ben Shapiro, 11-5, 11-1, 11-9 in the exhibition match.

In the evening match against Vassar, junior Ibrahim Khan played in the top spot, defeating Ricardo Espinosa 11-3, 11-4, 11-2. Riedelsheimer was in the two spot and earned an 11-5, 11-3, 11-5 victory over Kiet Phun, while Fernandez rounded out the top three, beating Daniel Doctor by the score of 11-2, 11-1, 11-1.

At number four, Vargas worked past David Garfinel 11-6, 11-1, 11-7, and Will Campo cruised past Ryan Kurtzman at five, 11-1, 11-1, 11-3. In the sixth spot was Tim Lasusa, defeating Juan Pablos Fernandez 11-3, 11-1, 11-1.

Ness Billimoria, Kingsley Amoako and Michael Edson all earned wins at the bottom of the ladder for the Saints. Billimoria beat Alan Darer, (11-3, 11-6, 11-2), while Amoako earned a win against Isabelle Bertram 11-2, 11-3, 11-6. Edson rounded out the scoring for the Saints with a win over Isabelle Bertram, 11-1, 11-1, 11-7, and Fisher topped Connie Zheng in an exhibition match, 11-4, 11-7, 11-3.
