4x800 highlights Day One of NYSCTC Championships at St. Lawrence University

St. Lawrence University's men's track and field team had a second place finish in the 4x800 relay and earned points in the long jump and javelin as competition got underway in the 2015 New York State Collegiate Track Conference outdoor championships at SLU's Merrick-Pinkard Track and Field complex on Friday.

The team of Dan Driscoll, Harrison Sloan, Thomas Caulfield and Trevor Bibb ran 7:55.24, but the University of Rochester took a big early lead and the Saints 8046could never fully close the gap, finishing 3.5 seconds behind the Yellowjackets.

Jamal Samaroo added seventh in the long jump with a 6.46 meters jump and J.T. Martell was eighth in the javelin for the other Saint points on Friday. Ellis Toll was 14th in 34:48.70 in the 10,000 meters which was the other final race contested on Friday.

The Saints are sixth in the team scoring heading into Saturday with 21 points. Rochester leadw with 55, RPI is second with 47 and St. John Fisher and RIT are tied for third with 35 in the 13-team field.

Several Saints advanced to Saturday finals in Friday preliminary races as Nick Crawford was second in 54.97 and Dan Viscardi (right) also advanced with a 57.51 clocking in the 400 hurdles and Harrison Stivers was sixth in 50.32 and Travis Hamre seventh in 50.64 in the 400 meter preliminaries.

Hamre was 12th in the 200 trials, Mark Jannini was 12th in the 100 hurdle trials and Scott Kasson finished 12th in the hammer in Friday competition. Shawn Lillie, who provided the Saints points in last weekend's decathlon, ran 11.32 in the 100, but did not advance. He was ninth in the long jump at 6.25 meters and was ninth with Connor Heaney 11th in the javelin throw.

Competition will resume at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
